CBSE - Central Board of Secondary Education

A trail of developments marks the significant changes that took place over the years in shaping up the Board to its present status. U P Board of High School and Intermediate Education was the first Board set up in 1921. It has under its jurisdiction Rajputana, Central India and Gwalior. In response to the representation made by the Government of United Provinces, the then Government of India suggested to set up a joint Board in 1929 for all the areas which was named as the 'Board of High School and Intermediate Education, Rajputana'. This included Ajmer, Merwara, Central India and Gwalior.

Main objectives of CBSE are

  • To define appropriate approaches of academic activities to provide stress free, child centered and holistic education to all children without compromising on quality

  • To analyze and monitor the quality of academic activities by collecting the feedback from different stakeholders

 

  • To develop norms for implementation of various academic activities including quality issues; to control and coordinate the implementation of various academic and training programmes of the Board; to organize academic activities and to supervise other agencies involved in the process

 

  • To adapt and innovate methods to achieve academic excellence in conformity with psychological, pedagogical and social principles.

 

  • To encourage schools to document the progress of students in a teacher and student friendly way

 

  • To propose plans to achieve quality benchmarks in school education consistent with the National goals

 

  • To organize various capacity building and empowerment programmes to update the professional competency of teachers

 

  • To prescribe conditions of examinations and conduct public examination at the end of Class X and XII. To grant qualifying certificates to successful candidates of the affiliated schools.

 

  • To fulfill the educational requirements of those students whose parents were employed in transferable jobs

 

  • To prescribe and update the course of instructions of examinations

 

  • To affiliate institutions for the purpose of examination and raise the academic standards of the country.

The prime focus of the Board is on:

  • Skill learning by adding job-oriented and job-linked inputs

 

  • Regularly updating the pedagogical skills of the teachers and administrators by conducting in service training programmes, workshops etc.

  • Is the IGCSE Programme recognized by schools and universities worldwide?
    Yes.
  • What options are available after completing the IGCSE Programme?
    Although our Class X students have the opportunity to seek admission to the IB Diploma Programme in Classes XI and XII, the final choices are driven by considerations of their own plans about further learning and future career preferences as well as the School’s standards of academic performance / achievement and norms of acceptable behaviour. For students who do not choose to pursue the IB Diploma Programme at our School, other options include GCE 'A' Levels, the Advanced International Certificate of Education. It is also pertinent to note that students who pursue programmes like the IB Diploma, GCE 'A' Levels and so on, after their IGCSE Class X, will also have the option to study at universities in India.
  • What are the benefits of IGCSE, when compared with other examinations that might be taken in Classes IX and X? "
    Firstly, it is an international examination with worldwide recognition and credibility; Secondly, it encourages – indeed, demands – the questioning and discovery method of learning, rather than relying on rote learning; Thirdly, it provides excellent preparation for the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme. Students who have taken the IGCSE Programme will be familiar with the styles of learning and the expectations of the IBDP and A levels.
  • Is the IGCSE Programme recognized by higher secondary boards and universities in India?
    Yes, it is recognized by CBSE, CISCE and state education boards in India as a qualification for entry to Class XI or for other higher secondary education courses. It is also a recognized Class X qualification, as one of the prerequisites for admission to undergraduate courses in India.
  • How does the DP prepare students for university?
    The DP prepares students for a successful transition to higher education through its challenging and rewarding curriculum, which offers students a global perspective by cultivating international mindedness and developing key skills needed to succeed in further studies such as research, inquiry, independent study and critical analysis.
  • How do colleges and universities view the IBDP?
    World leading universities recognise the DP as one of the highest standards in university preparatory education. Research studies suggest that higher rates of DP students go on to university and higher education study than non-IB students. Further, DP students report being better prepared for postsecondary studies than their peers.
  • What is the The Diploma Programme (DP)?
    It is a curriculum designed by the International Baccalaureate (IB) for students in the final two years of secondary school or sixth form college. The DP is a rewarding and academically challenging programme of education that prepares students for success at university and life beyond study. It has been designed to address the intellectual, social, emotional and physical well-being of students.
  • What kind of student is a good candidate for the IBDP?
    The DP is a challenging course of study. Success throughout the programme depends on a student’s dedication to do his or her best, willingness to be organised in order to complete the work while leading a full, balanced life, and a strong commitment to learning in and beyond the classroom. That is more of an indicator of ability to earn the diploma than prior academic success.
  • Do DP teachers receive special training?
    All IBDP teachers receive professional development in the IB’s approaches to teaching and approaches to learning by certified IB workshop leaders. This is a requirement of IB World Schools implementing the DP.s and press "Manage Questions" button.
  • What are the advantages of an IB education?

  • Is SAT 2 harder than SAT 1?
    Generally, and statistically not really - SAT subject test are not harder than the regular SAT. While one in five students who sit for SAT Math Level 2 subject test get a perfect score, similar statistics / achievement is not there for SAT test, especially Math Section.
  • How many times can you take the SAT?
    While you can take the SAT as many times as you like, for the sake of everyone's sanity my advice to college-bound families is to have their students plan to take the exam at least 2 times after some preparation but to attempt to take the test no more than 4 times total.
  • Can I take SAT 1 and SAT 2 on the same day?
    No, you cannot take the SAT and the SAT 2 (subject test) on the same test day. The tests are conducted simultaneously.
  • Which is better SAT or SAT Subject Test?
    The SAT measures broad skills and general college readiness. It assesses your critical and analytical thinking skills along with your ability to apply what you know. SAT Subject Tests measure your skills and content specific knowledge within specific subject areas.
  • What is the point of SAT Subject Tests?
    While SATs are designed to measure your reasoning skills and overall college readiness, SAT Subject Tests are designed to assess your knowledge in specific subject areas. These subject areas are aligned with common high school courses and generally test high level high school skills and knowledge. The SAT Subject Tests that you take should be based on your interests and academic strengths. The tests are a great way to show colleges your interest in specific majors or programs of study (e.g., engineering, pre-med, cultural studies), and to highlight your strong points. You should also consider whether the colleges that you’re interested in require or recommend a specific Subject Test to enter a program or major. Remember, even if a college does not require Subject Test scores, submitting your scores may enhance your college application. See a list of colleges that require, recommend, or consider Subject Tests. Some colleges will grant an exemption from or credit for a freshman course requirement if a student does well on a particular SAT Subject Test. Check with the college you’re interested in about its policies.
  • What is a good SAT score?
    If you get a composite SAT score of 1083 or more, you are above average. The 75th percentile composite SAT test score is 1215, the 90th percentile is 1340 and the 95th percentile is 1410.
  • Is SAT 2 important?
    "SAT II subject exams are encouraged, but not required. Students are encouraged to submit SAT subject exam scores for academics’ areas of strength and/or interest. Since these exams are not required, students have the choice of which subject exams they want to report.
  • How many SAT 2 can you take in one day?
    SAT Subject Tests are given on the same days and times as the SAT I. That means that you can't take subject tests and the SAT 1 on the same day. However, you can take up to three SAT Subject Tests on the same day.
  • Which board is best for science?
    To conclude, which board to choose, depends on your priorities and what you want to do in life. If you are interested in engineering or medical courses, then CBSE is a safe bet. If you are inclined more towards science and commerce, then IGCSE or CISCE might be helpful.
